DHAKA, Jan 23, 2020 (BSS) – Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has urged to create public awareness to force the quarters, those are responsible for various kinds of migration, to share burden of rehabilitation of displaced people.

“Countries or agencies or groups that are responsible for creating violence and wars or creating global warming resulting in climate migrants … should help rehabilitation of these displaced people or migrants, he said.

The foreign minister was addressing the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Summit at Ecuadorian capital Quito on Wednesday, according to a message received here today.

Momen said despite of improvement of economic condition in developing countries, the number of migrants are increasing fast every year.

In this regard, he identified two other factors which are responsible for increasing migration, due to widespread violence, wars and other one is due to erratic climate change.

“GFMD may think of identifying the culprits of wars and violence, suppliers of mass destruction or that of global warming and create a global awareness and public opinion to force them to share the burden of rehabilitation and reintegration of migrants, refugees and displaced people”, he proposed.

The foreign minister also sought proactive support from global community to deal with the Rohingya crisis.

“Nearly 1.1 million people of Myanmar known as Rohingya were forcibly displaced from their ancestral home and Bangladesh is providing their temporary shelter, but cannot handle such a huge people on our own. We need proactive support of global community,” he said.

Terming the Rohingya crisis as ‘defining issue of our time’, Momen said no country can deal with it alone.

He lauded that GFMD created two distinct opportunities as it is outside of UN’s strict discipline, politics and it is the only forum where States can informally interact with civil societies, private sector on the issue of migration.

“We would like to see some tangible projects and outcomes so that we can take those to our people and show them the importance of having GFMD,” he said.

In future, Momen hoped that GFMD would substantially contribute towards achievement of SDGs as the issue of migration is strongly interlinked with other vital issues.

“I suggest that GFMD must be owned by all stakeholders at their respective levels of engagements. It is not our option, it is our responsibility, Momen said.
