No negligence will be tolerated during city polls: CEC

DHAKA, Jan 22, 2020 (BSS)- Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda today said no negligence of officials involved in the forthcoming Dhaka city corporations’ polls will be tolerated.

“Stern actions will be taken against those who will show negligence during discharging their electoral duties on the city polls that will be held on February 1,” he said, addressing a meeting with law enforcement agencies at Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon here.

Presiding over the meeting, he directed the law enforcement agencies to resolve their minor problems consulting with their respective agencies heads.

He said “I expect no complaint or irregularity reaches to me. In case of any deviation in maintaining discipline, the police, BGB and RAB will solve those problems by consulting with their senior officials.”

He advised them to create peaceful environment to let voters cast their votes without fear, besides maintaining level-playing field.

He hoped the forthcoming city corporations’ elections will be held in a free, fair and acceptable manner.

About vote-rigging, he said the election is going to be held under the system of electronic voting machines (EVMs). It is not possible to cast false vote using EVM, he added.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary after emerging from the meeting told journalists that a peaceful and cheerful environment is currently prevailing as candidates and supporters are smoothly conducting their election campaigns in the capital.

He hoped the cit-dwellers would enjoy a peaceful atmosphere during the election day of city corporations polls maintaining the current festive mood.

Three Election Commissioners, EC secretary, chiefs of various services and representatives of the concerned ministries were present on the occasion.
