One to die in N’ganj 5-murder case

NARAYANGANJ, Aug 7, 2017 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing five members of a family last year.

District and Sessions Judge Hosne Ara Akhter handed down the verdict against Mahfuzur Rahman.

The prosecution story, in brief, is that Taslima Begum, 35, wife of Shafiqul Islam, a private car driver in the capital city Dhaka, their children Sumaiya, 5, Shantu, 10, his brother-in-law Morshedul, 22, and his sister-in-law Lamia Akter, 25, were found dead at their house in Baburail area on January 16, 2016.

Shafiqul Islam filed a case against unidentified miscreants with Narayanganj Sadar Police Station on January 17.

Later, police arrested Mahfuz, nephew of Shafiqul, on January 18.

On January 21, Mahfuz gave a confessional statement saying that he had killed them as Lamia, wife of Shafiqul’s brother Sharif, refused to make illicit relation with him.

On April 7, police submitted a charge sheet against Mahfuj in connection with the killing.

After examining all records and 23 witnesses, the court handed down the verdict.
