JS committee report on Tariff Commission Bill placed

SANGSAD BHABAN, Jan 14, 2020 (BSS) – The parliamentary standing committee report on the Bangladesh Tariff Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad today.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce Tofail Ahmed placed the report in the House with a recommendation of its passage in an amended form with
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

The committee members Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury,
Yussuf Abdullah Harun, Mohammad Hasan Imam Khan, Selim Altaf George and Begum
Sultana Nadira took part in the committee meetings in scrutinizing the bill.

Earlier, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun placed the bill in the House on
behalf of commerce minister Tipu Munshi on November 13, 2019 to amend some clauses of the
existing act with a view to cope the country’s trade with the increasing international trade.

The act will replace “Bangladesh Tariff Commission” with the word of “Bangladesh Trade and
Tariff Commission”.

The act once amended, it will help impose harmonized system code for the import and export
products or services and vigilance of foreign trade activities.

Besides, the commission will take necessary steps for protecting the local industries as per anti-
dumping, counter-veiling and safeguard measures, observation and revise of the international and
internal market price of the essentials and to carry out research and study for the interest of the
local industries and commerce, according to the draft bill.
