Oman’s late Sultan was a ‘true friend’ of Bangladesh: PM

DHAKA, Jan 11, 2020 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Sultan of Oman Qaboos bin Said Al Said, saying that he was a “true friend” of Bangladesh.

“During the tenure of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the relations between Bangladesh and Oman flourished towards the mutual benefits of the people of Bangladesh and Oman,” she said in a condolence message.

PM’s Assistant Press Secretary ABM Sarwer-e-Alom Sarker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, also mentioned that Sultan Qaboos was the “symbol of peace and neutrality” in the region as he maintained a meaningful relations with the Middle Eastern countries.

The prime minister recalled Sultan’s great leadership with dedicated services for the last five-decade to his nation.

“The late Sultan was credited with using Oman’s oil wealth to transform the sparsely-populated Gulf nation into a rich country of high standard of its citizens’ life,” she said.

The prime minister said Sultan Qaboos will be remembered as the pioneer for initiating the ‘Omani Renaissance’ by undertaking social, economic, educational, cultural reforms, and women empowerment as well as opening Oman up to the world.

“The sudden demise of the Sultan is an irreparable loss to the Sultanate of Oman,” she noted.

Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

Sultan Qaboos, the Arab world’s longest-serving ruler, died on Friday at the age of 79.
