Nine devotees die at Ijtema venue

DHAKA, Jan 11, 2020 (BSS) – A total of nine devotees have died due to old-
age complications and illnesses, during the first phase of Bishwa Ijtema at
the Ijtema venue, since Friday.

Bishwa Ijtema, the largest Islamic congregation after Hajj, started
yesterday on the bank of the Turag river in Tongi.

The deceased were identified as Tamij Uddin, 65, of Dimla area of
Debidwar, Cumilla, Abdur Razzak, 70, of Charghat Thana of Rajshahi,
Shahjahan, 60, of Ashugaj Thana of Brahmanbaria, Ali Asgar, 55, of Khalishpur
area in Gouranadi Thana of Barishal, Osman Gani Yusuf, 50, of Narayanganj’s
Bandar Thana, Shahidul Islam, 50, of Atrai Thana of Naogaon, Yakub Ali, 85,
Khoka Mia, 60, and Mohammad Ali, 70. Their namaz-e-janaza was held at the
Ijtema ground after today’s session, Ijtema Organizing Committee member
(Media) Md Mezbah Uddin Ahmed told the BSS correspondent.

Besides, a devotee named Shahid Hossain, 74, a resident of city’s
Mohammadpur area suffered severe burns as a gas cylinder exploded while he
was cooking in the ground.

He was taken to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital for treatment.
Later, he was sent to Dhaka Medical Burn Unit for better treatment. Emdad
Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongi Police Station confirmed the incident.
