DU students give 48hr ultimatum to arrest rapist

DHAKA, Jan 6, 2020 (BSS) – Students of Dhaka University today issued a
48-hour ultimatum to Dhaka University and other authorities concerned to the
arrest the culprits involved in the rape of a DU student.

“We will announce tougher programme if the rapist is not arrested within
48 hours,” said Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice
President Nurul Haque Nur while addressing a sit-in programme in front of
Raju Sculpture.

Soon after hearing the rape incident, students of the university took to
the street at midnight and announced the protest programme.

Three students are observing hunger strike on the premises of Raju
Memorial Sculpture. They said that they would not break their fast until the
rapist is not arrested.

Hundreds of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL)
formed a human chain in front of Raju Sculpture around 10:45am, demanding
arrest and punishment of the rapist. Demanding arrest and punishment of the
rapist, a group of members of Jatiatabadi Chhatra Dal also staged protest on
the premises of Aparajeyo Bangla this afternoon.

Santrash Birodhi Chhatra Oikya, an alliance of 12 student organisations
of DU led by DUCSU VP Nur, blocked Shahbagh intersection around 12:20pm
halting traffic movement on the busy roads.

However, they withdrew the blockade around 1:30pm after holding a sit-in
programme there.

Earlier around 11:00am, around 150 students of the alliance gathered in
front of Raju Sculpture on the campus and brought out a procession, demanding
exemplary punishment of the rapist.

The platform will gather on the campus around 11:00am tomorrow to stage
demonstration, DUCSU leader Nur added.
