MPs role vital to implement SPCPD project: Speaker

DHAKA, Dec 29, 2019 (BSS) – The activities of child marriage prevention and reduction of maternal and child mortality rates under SPCPD project should be set in a creative way to enable grassroots people get their benefits.

This was stated by Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury while addressing as the chief at an orientation workshop titled-‘Unfinished Agenda of the ICPD: Accelerating the promise’, jointly arranged by the Parliament Secretariat and UNFPA at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban today.

The Speaker suggested taking pilot initiatives to identify the areas of child marriage and maternal and infant mortality rates and asked the parliamentarians to prepare the action plan through constructive discussions.

Shirin Sharmin said, it is possible to achieve the SDG goals by properly implementing the activities of Strengthening Parliament’s Capacity in Integrating Population Issues into Development Project (SPCPD).

Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury addressed the workshop as the special guest while Population Science Department Chairman of Dhaka University Prof Dr Mohammad Mainul Islam, Professor Dr M Habibe Millat, MP and Aroma Dutta, MP presented their respective articles on the topic.

National Parliament Whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini gave the welcome speech.

Among others, former Chief Whip ASM Feroz, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Estimates Abdus Shahid, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Home Ministry Shamsul Haq Tuku and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Women and Children Affairs Ministry Meher Afroz Chumki, were present.
