Resilient supply chain mechanism suggested for RMG sector

DHAKA, Dec 18, 2019 (BSS) – Speakers at a workshop today emphasized on
disaster and climate resilience in supply chain process of RMG sectors in the
country for sustaining economic growth.

Though Bangladesh has achieved a lot in overall disaster management, yet
vulnerability of industry sector to mega disasters is not well addressed,
they observed.

They expressed the observation in the inception workshop of a study on
‘Supply Chain Resilience of RMG Sectors in Bangladesh’ held at the Bangladesh
International Conference Center (BICC) in the city, said a press release.

The National Resilience Programme (NRP) organised the workshop.

Planning Minister M A Mannan attended the workshop as the chief guest in
the inaugural session while Planning Division Secretary Md Nurul Amin
presided over the session.

BGMEA President Dr Rubana Huq spoke as the special guest. Additional
Secretary of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Md Mohsin, Director
General of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Mohammad Khorshed A Khastagir,
Assistant Representative of UNDP Bangladesh Md Khurshid Alam, among others,
were present on the occasion.

The speakers suggested risk mapping in supply chain process considering
hazards due to natural disasters and climatic extreme event such as seal
level rise, flood, water-logging, earthquake etc.

They also suggested for special measures to protect the industrial units
located in coastal belts and other disaster-prone areas of the country.
“Introducing mandatory provision for Business Continuity Plan (BCP) in all
industrial units under BEZA and BEPZA can be treated as best practice of
resilient business” the speakers added.
