DHAKA, Dec 18, 2019 (BSS) – Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today
expected the postponed Bangladesh-India Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) meeting
will be rescheduled soon.
The two-day JRC talks, scheduled to start from today in New Delhi, to
discuss an outline on distribution waters of the six common rivers between
Bangladesh and India was postponed at the last moment.
“We deferred the meeting through a consensus … we postponed it as we
believed more data on the six rivers need to be collected,” he told reporters
after attending a programme at Jatiya Shahid Miner premises here.
Momen said the fresh date of the meeting will be set when both the sides
become ready with full and correct data. “It (new date) depends on our
homework … the meeting won’t be productive without correct data,” he added.
The six common rivers include the Muhuri, Monu, Dharla, Khowai, Gumti
and Dudhkumar.
Bangladesh and India share a total of fifty four trans-boundary rivers.
The JRC was designed to resolve conflicts regarding sharing of waters of
these trans-boundary rivers. The foreign minister attended a discussion over
the “26th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Action Plan”, presided
over by acting president of Central Committee of the Bangladesh Mahila
Parishad Foujia Moslem.

Human Rights Commission Dr Mizanur Rahman and Bangladesh Mahila Parishad
General Secretary Maleka Banu spoke on the occasion among others.
The Beijing Declaration and Action Plan is an idealistic agenda for
women’s empowerment through it all the governments of the world come to the
unity to exercise the gender vision and to establish gender equality.
