World Environment Day observed

DHAKA, June 05, 2018 (BSS) – The World Environment Day was observed today in the country as elsewhere around the world with a view to creating mass awareness about the adverse impact of plastic use.

This year’s theme of the day was ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ while slogan of the day is ‘if you cannot reuse it, refuse it’.

Different government and non-government organisations (NGOs) as well as educational institutions chalked out elaborate programmes marking the day.

Awami League (AL)’s forests and environment affairs sub-committee organized a seminar marking the day at the National Museum at Shahbagh here.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader addressed it as the chief guest.

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Bangladesh organised a discussion at Jatiya Press Club at 11 am.

Environment and Forest Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud joined it as the chief guest.

Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) arranged a seminar titled ‘Plastic Pollution: Threat to Environment and Way forward’ at its office in the city’s Kalabagan area at 11 am.

Dhaka University Poribesh Sangsad (DUPS) also took various programmes marking the day. The programmes included planting saplings, seminar and procession on the campus.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages marking the day, wishing success of all the programmes of the day.

Marking the day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a message said: “A healthy planet is essential for a prosperous and peaceful future. We all have a role to play in protecting our only home, but it can be difficult to know what to do or where to start.”

That’s why this World Environment Day has just one request: beat plastic pollution, he added.

The World Environment Day is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of environment.

Since its inception in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
