Collective efforts need for eliminating extremism: Speaker

DHAKA, Dec 9, 2019 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury today stressed the need for collective efforts at International and
regional levels aiming to eliminate ‘extremism’ for building a peaceful world
as the extremism is an enemy of civilization and humanity.

“Peaceful world could be built by eliminating extremism through working
together at international and regional level as extremism is a global
problem”, said the Speaker while inaugurating the “Anti-Extremism National
Conference-2019” in city’s International Convention Center, Bashundara.

Extremism and terrorism should be rooted out from the grassroot levels, Dr
Sharmin told the conference jointly organised by Counter Terrorism and
Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit, Stop Violence Coalition Secretariat and a
non-government organisation Rupantar.

All would have to come forward for eliminating extremism through forging
social movement and raising mass awareness, said the Speaker. “Moral values
will be developed which would begin from family to academic level,” she
added.

International Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr Gowher Rizvi, US
Ambassador in Dhaka Earl R Miller and UNDP Resident Representative in
Bangladesh Mia Seppo also spoke as special guests on the occasion.

CTTC head and Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)
Manirul Islam gave the welcome address.

Regarding steps taken by Prime Minister, Dr Shirin Sharmin said Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken ‘Zero’ tolerance to combat extremism, adding
that “Extremism should to be wiped out by stopping finance for militancy.”

Later, the Speaker visited different mass awareness related anti-extremism
stalls.
