Collective efforts to face climate change in coastlines stressed

KHULNA, Dec 8, 2019 (BSS) – Officials at a participatory discussion here
have stressed collective efforts to face climate change impacts along with
ushering the way to promote diversified livelihoods in the coastal areas as
climate change appears threats to coastlines’ marginal and low-income people.

They came up with emphasizes at a meeting organized by district
administration under the project titled “Local Government initiatives on
climate change (LoGIC)” at deputy commissioner (DC) office’s conference room
yesterday afternoon.

LoGIC, a multi-donor collaborative initiative of the government, UNDP,
UNCDF, EU and SIDA, aims to enhance the capacity of vulnerable communities,
the Local Government Institutions (LGI) and civil society organisations for
planning and financing climate change adaptation solutions in selected
climate vulnerable areas.

The local government division is implementing the project involving Tk 4.83
crore for 2019 in 72 unions of Khulna, Bagerhat, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola,
Kurigram and Sunamganj.

Divisional Commissioner Dr. Muhammad Anwar Hossain Hawlader attended the
meeting as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Helal Hossain in
the chair.

Additional Secretary of Local Government Department (LGD) Md. Emdad Ullah
Mia, its Director Hossain Ali Khondokar, Deputy Secretary Md. Shamshul Islam
and Co-coordinator of the project Selina Sheli Khan, among others, spoke.

LGD’s Deputy Director Ishrat Jahan presented the key-note paper.

The meeting said that around two lakh vulnerable households in two coastal
upazilas of Koyra and Dakop are getting benefits from the government project,
which helps them enhance their resilience capacity to climate change.

She said 10 most vulnerable unions in Khulna have already been given about
Taka 2.55cr in the 2018-2019 fiscal years by the government to strengthen
their capacity for addressing climate change impacts.
