Master plan stressed to make Rangpur a smart city

RANGPUR, Dec 03, 2019 (BSS) – High officials, public representatives and
civil society members at a citizen dialogue have stressed on preparing a
long-term master plan and its proper implementation to turn Rangpur into a
safe, clean and smart city.

They expressed the opinion at the event styled ‘Safe and Clean City’
organised by Rangpur Press Club at its auditorium on Monday afternoon with
its President Rashid Babu in the chair.

Divisional Commissioner KM Tariqul Islam addressed the dialogue as the
chief guest while Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa participated as
main discussant.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Alim
Mahmud, Deputy Commissioner Md Asib Ahsan and Civil Surgeon Dr Hirombo Kumar
Roy spoke as special guests.

President of district Awami League Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, its Joint General
Secretary Rosy Rahman and civil society members addressed the dialogue
moderated by General Secretary of Rangpur Press Club Rafiqul Islam Sarker.

The speakers discussed issues like pitiable road conditions, traffic
jams, air pollution, violation of building codes, water-logging, unplanned
transportation and waste management and urbanization and suggested way-outs.

They suggested for establishing well-planned playgrounds, health
centers, educational institutions, spacious roads and developed traffic
system in the city.

The Deputy Commissioner suggested for proper coordination among all
authorities concerned to resolve the issues and renaming Chikley Lake of the
city as Bangabandhu Recreation Park.

The RpMP Commissioner suggested for giving priority on naming roads of
the city after the names of martyred freedom fighters and sought cooperation
of all to further improve the city’s traffic system.

The City Mayor said infrastructural works spending Taka 260 crore are
progressing fast and there will be visible developments of roads, culverts,
bridges and drainage systems in the city within the next six months.

He sought cooperation and suggestions of all concerned to gradually
build a safe, clean and smart Rangpur city.

The Divisional Commissioner said modern thinking should be applied to
turn Rangpur into a safe, clean and smart city adopting a long-term master
plan.

The city corporation, administration, police departments with experts and
prominent people should be involved in preparing the master plan and work
unitedly for development of the city.

“Steps have been taken by all concerned for excavations, cleaning,
beautification and restoration of water flow in the traditional Shyamasundari
Canal round the year in the city,” he said.
