5 killed in road accident in western India

NEW DELHI, June 4, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – At least five people have been
killed after a trailer rammed into a truck and a car in the western Indian
state of Rajasthan, police said Monday.

The accident occurred on a small bridge on a highway in the state’s
Udaipur district.

“The trailer first hit the truck, carrying security personnel, from behind
and then collided with the car coming from opposite direction,” local police
official Karamveer Singh told media.

The impact of the crash was such that the truck fell off the bridge, while
the trailer overturned and the car got badly damaged.

“Two security personnel on the truck died on the spot. Two persons
travelling in the car also lost their lives, while the trailer driver also
died,” he said.

Eye-witnesses told cops that the trailer was travelling at high speed and
its driver lost control of the vehicle and failed to apply brakes, leading to
the accident.

A case has been registered and probe ordered into the incident, the
official added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road
accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and
vehicles.
