EC likely to get Tk1200cr in FY19
DHAKA, June 04, 2018 (BSS) – Election Commission is likely to get an allocation of Taka 1,200 crore in the upcoming national budget for the financial year 2018-19 (FY19) to conduct various elections, including the national election, and bear the other expenses.
“There will be more allocation for the election commission as national election will be held in this year,” Finance Secretary Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury told BSS.
According to the Finance Ministry, EC has demanded Taka 700 crore for holding the national election in free and fair manner. The commission demanded Taka 500 crore for holding other elections, including local government elections.
In outgoing fiscal year 2017-18, the government allocated Taka 1,070 crore, which was Taka 802 core in FY17, Taka 1290 crore in FY16 and Taka 999 crore in FY16.
The next general election will be held in the current year.
Barring exceptional circumstances, the Constitution of Bangladesh requires that the elections take place within the 90-day period before the expiration of the term of the Jatiyo Sangshad. The previous general election took place in 2014.
