5 of family drown in sea off western India

NEW DELHI, June 4, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – At least five people have drowned in
the Arabian Sea while swimming off a beach in western Indian state of
Maharashtra, police said Monday.

The incident took place Sunday evening when seven members of a family went
for swimming in the sea off the coast of Ratnagiri, over 300 km from state
capital Mumbai.

“The family was on its way to Ratnagiri from Mumbai when they halted at
Arey Ware beach and went into the sea. The five drowned after getting caught
in a whirlpool,” a police official said.

“Their bodies were recovered by divers late Sunday night. The two
survivors, who were rescued by local people, were given first aid,” he added.

It is believed those who drowned were surprised by a sudden low tide.
“However, a probe has been ordered,” the official said.
