Sports calendar marking Bangabandhu’s Birth Centenary soon

DHAKA, Nov 26, 2019 (BSS) – The government will prepare a sports calendar soon marking the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary to be celebrated from March 17, 2020 to March 17, 2021.

The information was revealed today at the meeting of the ‘Sub-committee for Organising the Sports and International Tournament’ at the International Mother Language Institute here.

Committee Convener and State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Zahid Ahsan Russel presided over the meeting while Chief Coordinator of Bangabandhu Birth Centenary Celebration National Implementation Committee Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.

Youth and Sports Secretary Akhter Hossain moderated the meeting.

After the meeting, Zahid Ahsan Russel said Youth and Sports Ministry is going to take elaborate events to celebrate successfully the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“Bangabandhu had a passion in football. His contributions to improve sports are well known. To make the celebration of Bangabandhu Birth Centenary successful, we will take elaborate programmes,” he added.

The state minister informed that Youth and Sports Ministry will meet soon with the different federations and associations for fixing the domestic and international events.

“Earlier, we fixed 89 domestic and international events. Later, the number of events was increased. Today, we have taken a decision to meet the federations to fix the number of events,” he added.

Responding to a question, Russel said different proposals are being come for arranging football match with renowned clubs, including the Manchester United.

Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury said the government is taking different programmes in home and abroad to make the celebration of the Bangabandhu’s Birth Centenary successful.

“During the celebration of the birth centenary, the government will organise different international and domestic tournaments. Through the events, the government will present the contribution of Bangabandhu among the people, especially youth,” he added.

Kamal Chowdhury said the federations and associations will submit their specific plans within a short time for fixing the finial programmes.

In the meeting, Akhter Hossain informed that a total of 53 national federations have placed their work plan and budget in a bid to celebrate the birth centenary of Bangabandhu.

“From their proposals, a total of 92 events were fixed preliminary. The federations and associations have planed 50 international events and 42 domestic events,” he added.

Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) President Kazi Salauddin and Senior Vice President Abdus Salam Murshedy, MP, and Bangladesh Women Sports Federation President Mahabub Ara Begum Gini, MP, among others, were present at the meeting.

During the meeting, Kazi Salauddin said Bangladesh will host the South Asia Football Federations (SAFF) Championship 2020 in September next year marking the Bangabandhu’s Birth centenary.
