HC bars withdrawing groundwater in 4 Patiya villages

DHAKA, Nov 26, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered
authorities concerned to stop withdrawal of groundwater in four villages in
Patiya, Chattogram.

The court also asked the authorities to supply pure drinking water to
these villages Char Kanai, Hulaine, Panchuria and Habilash Dweep.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Tariq ul Hakim and
Justice Md Shohrowardi passed the order after holding hearing on a rule
issued in this regard.

The court asked Ministry of Water Resources to take decision within
three months whether to declare these four villages as water stressed area.

The court earlier issued the rule after holding primary hearing on a
writ filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA). Advocate
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, chief executive of BELA, took part in the hearing for
the writ, while deputy attorney general Qazi Mainul Hasan stood for the
state.
