ILO for global social protection to achieve SDGs

GENEVA, Nov 25, 2019 (BSS) – Director-General of International Labour Organisation (ILO) Guy Ryder today laid emphasis on ensuring global social protection to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1.3 by reducing poverty.

“To ensure global social protection and make a drive to mitigate the issue, we must deal with labour market,” he said while addressing a panel discussion on ‘Social Priority, A Global Priority and an Investment with High Returns’ at ILO headquarters here.

The ILO chief said social protection should be interlinked as an important issue.

Guy Ryder said it is necessary for adaptation of social protection for all.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Labour and Social Policies of Italy Nunzia Catalfo said her government will invest 20 billion Euros for social protection sector.

She said that it would have to guarantee people for protection, adding, “Italy initiates for introducing a law to protect workers. Transport and housing system will help workers.”

South African Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Boitumelo Moloi said that her government brought all people under social protection, which was launched excluding black people, but now it included black.

She said in her country some 29 percent people are unemployed while 60 percent people are young, adding, “Everyone has right to enjoy social security and 17 million people are now under social safety net.”

Meanwhile, Roberto Suarez Santos, secretary-general of the ILO of Employers and Sharan Burrow, general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation joined the discussion.

Earlier, the ILO Director-General formally inaugurated the four-day Global Social Protection Week.

In the inaugural ceremony, Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, made a presentation on various global issues through video screening.

Michelle Bachelet, High Commissioner for Human Rights, was present. The event was moderated by Nozipho Mbanjwa.
