DHAKA, June 3, 2018 (BSS) – Experts at a seminar today stressed the need
for taking an integrated measure to mitigate water-logging as well as prevent
environmental pollution in Dhaka city.

They said water-logging problem is deepening here as water-bodies around
Dhaka city are being grabbed day by day.

City Development Journalists Forum-Bangladesh (CDJFB) organised the
seminar titled, ‘Causes of water-logging in Dhaka city and way forward’ at
Cirdap auditorium here.

Chaired by CDJFB president Amitosh Pal, the seminar was addressed, among
others, by member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Local Government
Ministry Fazle Hossain Badsha, country director of Plan International
Bangladesh Orla Murphy, chief executive officer of Dhaka South City
Corporation Khan (DSCC) Mohammad Bilal, superintending engineer of Dhaka
North City Corporation (DNCC) Md Sharif Uddin, general secretary of
Bangladesh Institute of Planners Dr Adil Muhammad Khan and project director
of Rajuk’s Detailed Area Plan Ashraful Islam.

Chairman of Water and Environment Institute engineer M Inamul Haque made
the keynote presentation at the seminar.

Speaking as the chief guest, Badsha said: “We have taken emergency
initiatives to cut sufferings of the city dwellers from water-logging
problem.”

Noting that grabbing of rivers and canals around the Dhaka city is the
main reason behind its water-logging, he said the authorities concerned
should take necessary measures to recover the occupied water- bodies and
canals to address water problems in the capital.

The experts said lack of coordination among urban agencies and
inappropriate planning are blamed to the city’s water-logging problem.
