Air cargo flight with onion arrives

DHAKA, Nov 20, 2019 (BSS) – The first air cargo flight with onion arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport this evening as part of the government’s initiative to keep contain the spiral hike of essential cooking ingredient.

A cargo aircraft of Azerbaijan’s “Silkway West Airlines” carrying nearly 82 tonnes of onion landed at the airport around 7:30 tonight, HSIA official sources said.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Tuesday said the government decided to import 50,000 metric tons of onion by cargo planes to make the onion price down in the market.

Meanwhile, the civil aviation and tourism ministry decided today that the Biman Bangladesh Airlines will waive its cargo handling charge for any airlines that will import onion.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by civil aviation and tourism secretary M Mohibul Haque held at the ministry at secretariat.

“Biman charges Taka 18 per kg for perishable goods, imported by any airlines, for its cargo handling services. We have decided to waive the charge in case of onion import for public interest,” Biman’s Managing Director and CEO Md Mokabbir Hossain told BSS this afternoon.

As per the decision, the waiving of cargo handling charge will be enforced from today and continue as long as onions are imported through air cargo while the ministry to provide all out support to the onion importers in this regard.
