Women making significant contributions to national economy: Palak

DHAKA, Nov 19, 2019 (BSS) – The women has been making significant contributions to the national economy as the womenfolk make up 80 percent workers in the readymade garment (RMG) industry which has over 34 percent contribution to the country’s GDP.

This was stated by State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak at a seminar on “The role of women in creating environment for entrepreneur culture and innovation” arranged by Innovation Design and Entrepreneurship Academy (iDEA) Project at ICT tower here.

“ICT Division has been implementing different projects, including IDEA and women empowerment, for encouraging the women to flourish their innovative ideas through entrepreneurships at home and abroad,” he said.

Deputy Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Habibun Nahar, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Dr Rubana Huq, Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) Executive Director Partho Pratim Deb addressed the seminar. IDEA Project Director Mujibul Haque chaired it.

Palak said there are 5,865 union digital centers in the country now and a woman is working along with a man in each UDC.

Because of these initiatives of the government, it has been possible to create over 10,500 women entrepreneurs in 21 districts in the last several years.

The state minister said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working to remove discrimination between male and female through the optimum utilization of ICT to build a prosperous Bangladesh.
