Memorial meeting on Shahriar Shahid held at BSS

DHAKA, Nov 17, 2019 (BSS) – National news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangsha (BSS) today arranged a reminiscence meeting and doa mahfil marking the first death anniversary of its former Managing Editor Shahriar Shahid.

The colleagues of Shahid joined the memorial meeting and milad mahfil at BSS office after Asar prayers, recalling his contribution to the state-run wire service and journalism as well.

Chaired by BSS Managing Editor Anisur Rahman, the meeting was addressed, among others, by BSS City Editor Madhusudan Mondal, Deputy Chief News Editor Ruhul Gani Sarkar Jyoti, Deputy Chief Reporter Sajjad Hossain Sabuj, Special Correspondent Mahfuza Yasmin, planning and administration chief M Ali Khan Apu and president of BSS employees union Mustaque Ahmed. BSS Chief Reporter Tareq Al Naser moderated the memorial meeting.

The speakers said Shahriar was a sincere and talented journalist with high human qualities, while he served professional duties in BSS with utmost sincerity and devotion.

Shahriar was a good human-being too, they said, adding the country lost a brilliant journalist upon his death.

Emotion gripped the meeting as Shahriar’s colleagues in BSS recalled their personal memories and particularly his loving and caring attitude for others alongside his high professional standards and managerial skills.

The speakers largely attributed to Shahriar’s spiritual pursuit as an admirer of Sufism and aimed to instill into others a sense of love for universal humanity while he tried to reflect his philosophy in his work place as a journalist with managerial responsibility, setting an example for new generation journalists.

They also recalled with tributes Shahriar’s basic research into the 1971 Liberation War that yielded 30 basic books and several documentaries on the war history based on 1971 veterans’ interviews and comparative studies on the war.

Shahriar, son of illustrious journalist and now defunct Bangladesh Times Editor AKM Shahidul Haque, died at a city hospital following a heart attack on November 17 in 2018 at the age of 55.

He was laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard at Doukar Char village under Raipura upazila of Narsingdi district.

Shahriar, a founding member of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), wrote over 30 books based on interviews of the gallantry award winning freedom fighters.

He also made some documentaries on the Liberation War and wrote region-based history of the Liberation War.
