MUNSHIGANJ, Nov 17, 2019, (BSS) – Three persons went missing as a sand carrying trawler (bulkhead) capsized being hit by a passenger launch in the river Meghna in Gajaria launch ghat area of the district today.
The missing persons are Aslam, 28, Emaidul, 38, and one unidentified man.
Earlier, the bulkhead was seized by the Coast Guards and anchored near the Gazaria Ghat for moving at night. It capsized in the river at about 5.15 am after being hit by the ‘MV Kirtankhola-2’ launch coming from Barishal, OC of Gajaria thana Harun-or-Rashid told BSS.
Soon after the capsize, four sleeping workers in it drowned while Nizam, 40, managed to swim ashore from the river.
Gajaria Coast Guard sources said that the launch driver Md Shahidul Islam, and masters Jahangir Hossain and Yunus Bepari were arrested in this regard.
According to the launch driver, the accident occurred due to heavy fog.
DC of Munshiganj Md Moniruzzaman Talukder told BSS that fire service units and divers are conducting rescue operation in different points of the river and trying to identify the trawler.
