Revive glory of football with spirit of Liberation War: Inu

DHAKA, June 02, 2018 (BSS) – Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said today that footballers played a glorious role during the country’s liberation war and they should continue the tradition in the same spirit.

He recalled that during the liberation war the national football team toured India and popularized the cause of the war.

He recalled how Zakaria Pinto led the team bravely, amidst standing ovation from the crowd.

The minister also reminisced the times when he was the goalkeeper for the national side while Pintu led it.

The minister was speaking at the publication ceremony of a book “Footballer Golpo, Footballarder Golpo” by Sports’ Journalist Masud Alam, who works for the Daily Prothom Alo.

Inu further said that the liberation war was a total struggle. Teachers fought from their classrooms, writers used their pens, guerillas used their guns, farmers used their land and airmen used their aircraft to destroy enemy forces.

Football which costs little and is popular throughout the country is facing a depression now. “It must overcome it,” he said.

Praising the writer for the book, he said that the book was a diary of a hundred footballers over the last six decades.
