BD could have achieved far success, barring BNP’s ill politics: Hasan

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 15, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said Bangladesh could have gone a long way in the development landscape in the last ten years if the BNP and its allies had not had a negative politics in the country.

“Dhaka-Chattogram highway, also known as the economic life line of the country, remained under siege enforced by BNP days after days as they (BNP) used to hurl petrol bombs. They held the people hostage in those days. Prolonged chaos triggered by BNP harmed the country to achieve its expected level of economic development,” the minister said.

He said negative politics of BNP was the main obstruction towards achieving development of the country.

Dr Hasan was addressing the divisional discussion on “Decade of Industry and Trade development” held at World Trade Centre in the city this evening.

The information minister said everyone can criticize the government but it should be objective.

He said under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has reached to a new height in recent years.

Hasan said the average per capital income was $ 600 in last ten years while it now stands at $ 2000 dollars.

During 2008, 41 percent people were living below poverty level but now the percentage comes down to 20, he added.

He said Bangladesh has become a food surplus country due to accelerated pace of industrialization.

The information minister said under the dynamic leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh trumped over hunger and poverty.

Moreover, the poverty reduced to 50 percent compared to earlier and Bangladesh is now a case study country to the World Food Organization,
Hasan said.

The information minister said about 15 crores people of the country are using mobile phones while three crores people are having access to Face book.

The information minister also said about 94 percent residents of the country are getting power facilities. “We hope in Mujib Year, the country will be able to bring cent percent people under electricity coverage”, he added.

AL commerce and industries secretary Mohammad Abdus Sattar delivered the welcome address while advisor to the AL and eminent social scientist Dr Anupom Sen addressed the function as the main speaker.

AL Commerce And Industries Sub-committee President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed presided over the function, also addressed by city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, MA Latif MP, deputy publicity and publication secretary of AL Aminul Islam Amin, special assistant to the Prime Minister and AL deputy office secretary Barrister Biplop Barua, President of Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI) Mahbubul Alam.

Directors of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries, representatives of different trade organizations and local elites among others were present at the meeting.
