Experts for reviving canals to mitigate water logging in city

DHAKA, June 2, 2108 (BSS) – Experts in a roundtable discussion here today put emphasis on reviving the canal in their former shapes by creating networks between canals and drains for reducing water logging in the city.

They said water logging could not be reduced by irrigation of water by pump. If necessary, networks should be created between canals and drains by acquiring land and canals to revive their former shapes, they added.

The experts were addressing the roundtable meeting organized by Dhaka Utility Reporters Association (DURA) at the auditorium of Jatiya Press Club (JPC).

Bangladesh Institute of Plans (BIP) Vice President Professor Dr Md Aktar Mahmud presented a keynote paper in the meeting.

BIWTA former executive engineer Tofail Ahmed, Rajuk Detail Area Plan Director Ashraful Islam, Paribesh Banchao Andolan Chairman Abu Naser Khan and DURA General Secretary Tofazzal Hossain Rubel, among others, addressed the meeting.

Tofail Ahmed said important canals within the city area will have to be re-excavated to increase their depth.

He said the government has taken many projects at different period to mitigate the water logging problems.

Ahmed said water logging has made the life of people in the city miserable as most of roads remain submerged during the rainy season. Consequently, water logging has become one of the prime problems for residents of the city.

“We need to take reality-based coordinated planning and initiatives to mitigate the problems,” he added.
