RAJSHAHI, Nov 14, 2019 (BSS)- Silk related officials and researchers at a meeting here stressed the need for making the sericulture more effective and modernized for generating employment opportunities in the rural areas side by side with cutting its poverty.
They observed that scientific method and devices should be promoted in the grassroots level sericulture and mulberry farming to make the people interested and inspired to the process so that the sector can be revitalized.
The observation came at the inaugural ceremony of a daylong conference and entrepreneurs searching- 2019 related to sericulture in farming method at Puthiya Upazila Parishad Conference Hall in the district today.
Upazila Administration and Regional Silk Extension Office jointly organized the conference in association with Bangladesh Silk Development Board (BSDB) in order to discuss and devise ways and means on how to intensify the silk sector.
BSDB Director General Abdul Hakim addressed the conference as chief guest while its Member Abdul Mannan, Chief Extension Officer Emdadul Bari, Puthiya Upazila Chairman Golam Hira and its Vice-chairmen Abdul Matin and Mousumi Rahman spoke as special guests with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Waliuzzaman in the chair.
Abdul Hakim said boosting production of local yarn can help revitalising the silk sector to regain its lost legacy alongside meeting up the existing local demands.
Importance should be given on how to boost up the grassroots yarn production through proper utilising the existing natural and other infrastructural resources.
He viewed that the local consumption could be met up through domestic outputs after the best uses of the existing natural resources and there is no doubt in this regard.
Besides, he told the meeting that BSDB has been implementing three projects involving around Taka 96.83 crore aimed at improving living and livelihood condition of the targeted grassroots people particularly the poor and distressed women through substantial and sustainable development of the traditional silk sector.
He added that the projects are being implemented in almost throughout the country particularly the potential ones for the silk farming and rearing for achieving the sustainable development goals in light of the Government’s Seventh Five Year Plan.
