Access to govt. services to disabled people stressed in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Nov 08, 2019 (BSS) – Government officials and public representatives at a discussion have stressed on extending government services to physically challenged people for ensuring their rights, welfare and development.

They expressed their opinion at a discussion, organised by Rangdhanu District Protibondhi Adhikar Sangstha (RDPAS) at Badarganj upazila parishad auditorium in municipal town yesterday, a press release said today.

Access Bangladesh Foundation and Commonwealth Foundation extended assistance in arranging the event on ‘Promoting Rights of Grassroots’ Persons with Disabilities through Community-led Initiatives.

President of RDPAS Saidar Rahman presided over the discussion meeting, participated by upazila level public representatives, government officials of different departments, disabled people, and civil society members.

Chairman of Badarganj upazila parisahd Fazle Rabbi Sweet attended the discussion as chief guest while its Vice-chairmen Tazul Islam and Nazma Jahanur spoke as special guests.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Arshad Hossain, Upazila Youth Development Officer Borhan Rashid and Upazila Assistant Education Officer Shamim Akhter discussed various services being provided by their respective organizations to disabled population.

The chief guest said the government has been implementing massive programs for welfare of the disabled persons through ensuring their constitutional and human rights, development, education, healthcare and social honour with dignity.

He urged service providing government officials for reaching all government services, facilities and assistance sincerely to physically challenged people on way to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030 .

President of RDPAS Saidar Rahman summarized statistics and social status of physically disabled population living in Badarganj upazila and various problems being faced by them sometimes in getting government services and facilities.

He proposed for increasing allocations in the annual development budget of the upazila parishad in education, health, social safety net and other sectors for ensuring equal socio-political and human rights of the disabled people.
