Councilors to bear responsibility for misdeed: Atiqul
DHAKA, Oct 26, 2019 (BSS) – Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam today said that the corrupt councilors have to take responsibility of their misdeed, DNCC would not be liable.
Ensuring his cooperation with the law enforcement agencies to book the corrupted councilors the Mayor said, “Offenders have to be punished”.
He said this at a programme at the Government Titumir College premises to mark Community Policing Day organised by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Gulshan Zone.
“I don’t take or pay any extortion money. The law enforcement agencies will take action against anyone who traffics drugs, engages in extortion or land-grabbing. Each individual is accountable for his own action,” he said.
He said, “Footpaths and canals will be freed from illegal occupation.”
The mayor also announced the DNCC’s plans to set up complaint boxes so that women can inform the DNCC about their grievances.
“We will keep their names and addresses confidential. Police will later look into it and take appropriate measures after speaking to them,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of community policing, Atiqul urged citizens to assist them in curbing crime, militancy and drug use.
DMP Deputy Commissioner for Gulshan Zone Sudip Kumar Chakrabarty presided over the programme. Akbar Hossain Pathan, AKM Rahmatullah,MP, DMP Joint Commissioner Sheikh Najmul Alam and Principal of Government Titumir College Professor Md Ashraf Hossain spoke, among others, at the meeting.
