RAJSHAHI, Oct 21, 2019 (BSS) – Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) is pledge-
bound to make the metropolis eco-friendly through massive plantation of trees
alongside taking other initiatives.

“We are urging authorities of public and private entities including
educational institutions and installations to supplement the city
corporation’s efforts of massive plantation of trees,” said RCC Mayor AHM
Khairuzzaman Liton while inaugurating a tree plantation programme at
Shalbagan City Park as chief guest.

On the occasion, around 250 saplings of various ornamental trees donated
by Varendra University (VU) were transplanted there.

VU Adviser Prof Saidur Rahman Khan and its Vice-chancellor Prof Osman Gani
Talukder, RCC Ward Councilor Towhidul Haque and Chief Engineer Ashraful Haque
were present at the programme.

Liton said all quarters should take the responsibility of protecting the
city and its adjacent areas from the adverse impacts of climate change.

As part of the adaptation measures, massive plantation of trees could play
an important role in coping with the adverse impact of global climate change,
he added.

“We are also implementing a project titled ‘Zero soil’ to cover all the
available top soils with green and various trees,” he said adding that
plantation of 14,500 tree saplings in the current season has been launched
aiming to safeguard the city’s environment.
