Govt implementing Taka 1,923 crore navigability project for 24 river routes

DHAKA, May 29, 2018 (BSS) – The government is implementing a project, worth Taka 1,923 crore, to develop the navigability of 24 river routes in the first phase, out of 53 rivers.

“To this end, the government is implementing different long-term, mid-term and short-term projects under the shipping ministry,” Shipping Ministry’s planning wing senior official Enayet Hossain told BSS.

The present government is implementing ‘Capital Dredging’ project worth Taka 11,470 crore for the development of navigability of inland river routes.

Besides, as a part of mid-term plan, another project for the development of navigability of 12 important river routs worth Taka 508.50 crore is also going on, he added.

Hossain said the government has already completed different development works to protect the navigability of the river routes.

He said the government, after assuming power, recovered around 1,100 kilometers river routes and around 3,000 acres of land from the illegal occupants.

The development of navigability of around 110 kilometers of river routes of Madhumati river in Madaripur-Charmugariya and Tekerhat-Goplaganj areas, Apar Kumar river, Loayar Kumar river and Kumar river has been completed, he said.

The government has constructed 20 kilometers walkways beside the Buriganga, the Turag and the Shitalakkya rivers while more 50 kilometers walkways will be constructed soon, Hossain added.
