600 flood victims get TK 27 lakh from Netherlands’ project in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Oct 01, 2019 (BSS) – A total of 600 flood victims of Kamarjani
union under Sadar upazila in the district got cash of TK 27 lakh from a
project of Netherlands on Monday to mitigate their sufferings caused by
recent flood.

The cash was distributed to the selected beneficiaries of the union under
the Humanitarian Assistance in Flood Affected Areas of Gaibandha and Kurigram
(HAFAAGK) project funded by Kerk in Actie and ICCO Cooperation, Netherlands,
sources said.

A cash out ceremony organized by RDRS Bangladesh was also held on
the premises of Kamarjani union parishad (UP) this afternoon.

Mostafa Nurul Islam Reza, operation lead, SONGO (Sustained Opportunities
for Nutrition Governance) project, ICCO Cooperation, addressed the function
as the chief guest while UP chairman Abdus Salam Zakir presided over the
function.

Moderated by Mahbubur Rahman, upazila coordinator, SONGO project, the
function was also addressed among others by general secretary of Gaibandha
Press Club Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman and a beneficiary man Nirmal Chandra
Mohanta.

Mostafa Nurul Islam Reza in his speeches said a devastating flood visited
the district in the month of July causing more than 50 unions including
Kamarjani here were submerged creating untold sufferings to the people of the
unions.

To lessen their sufferings, the Kerk in Actie and the ICCO Cooperation,
Netherlands stood beside the flood victims of Kamarjani union of Sadar
upazila in the district, he also said.

Reza also urged the beneficiaries to purchase the essentials to run their
families smoothly during the post flood period.

UP chairman Abdus Salam Zakir in his speeches thanked the donors for
standing beside the flood victims of the union with cash to help them pass
their days without economical trouble at critical time.

Later, the cash was distributed to the beneficiaries in presence of all.
Each of the beneficiaries received TK 4500 from the project.

Livelihood adviser of SONGO project-ICCO Cooperation Moshiur Rahman,
project coordinator Ashraful Islam, technical officer Mukta Rani Roy,
district coordinator, SONGO project-RDRS Bangladesh Arifur Rahman, Sadar
upazila coordinator Mohona Akter, social worker Saddam Hossain Paban, UP
members and local elite including media men were present on the occasion.

Talking to the BSS, Mostafa Nurul Islam Reza said earlier the SIM cards
were provided to the beneficiaries and then, the money was transferred to
their respective accounts through Dutch Bangla mobile banking system to avoid
any criticism.

Apart from it, as many as 325 flood victims each of Chilmari union under
Chilmari upazila of Kurigram district would also get same amount of cash from
the HAFAAGK project very soon through the system, he added.
