DHAKA, May 29, 2018 (BSS) – Dhaka University (DU) authorities yesterday
dismissed its former registrar Syed Rezaur Rahman over history distortion of
Bangladesh in a publication on the occasion of the university’s 95th founding
anniversary in 2016.

The decision of dismissal was taken at a Syndicate meeting held at Sir
Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban chaired by Vice Chancellor (VC)
Professor Md. Akhtaruzzaman.

Rahman was fired from his job permanently over mentioning BNP founder
Ziaur Rahman as the first President of the country in a DU publication, a
syndicate member confirmed BSS.

Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Muhammad Samad and Pro-VC (Academic)
Professor Nasreen Ahmad were also present, among others, in the meeting.

“We have taken the decision as the allegation against Rahman was proved by
the tribunal, which was formed to investigate the issue,” DU VC Akhtaruzzaman
told BSS.

A souvenir, supervised by then acting Registrar Rahman, was published on
the occasion of the university’s founding anniversary on July 1, 2016. In the
souvenir, an article titled ‘Smrity Amlan’, was published in where the author
claimed that “Ziaur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh”.

Section officer Rifat Amin also suffered demotion for involving in the
publication, the VC added.

Meanwhile, a five member probe committee has also been formed over an
allegation of another incident of history manipulation by DU Marketing
Department Professor Morhsed Hasan Khan.

In an article titled Joteermoy Zia, published on March 26 this year in
Bangla daily newspaper Naya Diganta, Morshed claimed Major Ziaur Rahman first
declared Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 which was apparent distortion of
country’s history.
