1 killed, 6 injured after driver in 90s hits pedestrians in Japan

TOKYO, May 28, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – Several pedestrians were struck on a
road, one fatally, in a city southwest of Tokyo by a driver in her 90s, local
police reported on Monday.

The driver, a female in her 90s, and six other people aged between 30 and
60 were rushed to hospital from the scene, where one of the women remained
unconscious temporarily.

According to local rescue officials, the accident, which occurred at around
10:55 a.m. local time in Chigasaki city in Kanagawa Prefecture, was the
result of the elderly female driver pulling out from a company building and
onto a main street.

In doing so, she struck four people who were on a crossing walk and two
other people who were on a side street.

The latest accident involving an elderly driver has underscored the need
for the National Police Agency (NPA) to enforce mandatory cognition tests for
drivers wishing to renew their licenses who are aged 75 or over, observers of
the matter said.
