Govt gives importance to rail sector development: Sujan

DHAKA, Sept 18, 2019 (BSS) – Railway Minister Mohammad Nurul Islam Sujan today said the present government has given much importance to the development of country’s rail sector as the Ministry of Railways is one of the major recipients of government’s development budget.

He stated this while addressing a seminar on ‘Knowledge Exchange Workshop on Dedicated Freight Corridors for Bangladesh Railway’ organized by the World Bank at a hotel in the capital.

Sujan said the Awami League government formed a separate railway ministry for the betterment of the concerned sector and approved a thirty-year master plan for sustainable development of the railway sector.

The minister also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very sincere for the overall development of the railway; adding two railway projects have been included in the fast track project.

The government is trying to reach rail services to the doorsteps of the people with the implementation of ongoing projects within the stipulated time, he added.

He said the government has taken initiatives to establish 88 economic zones and planned to connect railways with these economic areas, he said.

Regional rail communication network has been created in Bangladesh so that the ports of Nepal, Bhutan and the southeast parts of India will be able to use Bangladesh’s ports.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s International Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi, Bangladesh Country Director of World Bank Mercy Miyang Tembon, Ministry of Railways Secretary, Md Mofazzel Hossain and Bangladesh Railways Director General Md Shamsuzzaman spoke as special guests.
