Speedy trial is of essence to lessen dowry menace

DHAKA, Sept 17, 2019 (BSS) – Speedy trial of dowry related cases can
decrease the social menace with paving the way to build a deprivation-free
society as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,
legal expert opined.

A former executive director of National Women Lawyer Association demanded
expediting trial of dowry cases after thorough investigation, also demanding
exemplary punishment of culprits involved in dowry to make a developed
nation.

Women sometimes fall prey to dowry. Even for dowry, the incident of
killings takes place in the society. Such a victim is Rokeya (pseudonym). She
has allegedly been killed by her in-laws.

Rokeya’s family filed a murder case with city’s Kafrul Police Station
against her husband and three others alleging that she has been killed for
dowry.

According to the police report, Rokeya got married to Kamrul Hasan Bhuiyan
10 to 15 years ago. After one year, Kamrul started giving pressure for dowry.

Rokeya’s uncle Habib Ullha said they gave money to Kamrul after selling a
piece of land. But, Kamrul demanded more money as dowry to Rokeya’s father.
But, her father was unable to give the money. At last on April 26, Kamrul
allegedly banged her wife head against wall and she died instantly. But,
Kamrul informed us that Rokeya was died of stroke,

Another housewife named Rahima Akter (pseudonym) was also allegedly killed
for dowry in city’s Hazaribagh area.

According the police report, Rahima was married off with Parvej of
Hazaribagh area seven-eight months ago. Parvej started giving pressure on
Rahima for giving four lakh Taka as dowry after their marriage. With its
continuation, Rahima was allegedly hit with an iron pipe by her husband which
later left her to death. A murder case was filed in this connection on 22
April last.

Court sources said a total of 374 murder cases for dowry were filed with
city’s different police station in the last 17 years as 14 women were
allegedly killed for dowry in Dhaka city last year.

Lawyer of One-Stop Crisis Center (OCC) of Dhaka Medical College and
Hospital Fahmida Akter said many women, who are victimized for dowry, have
been taking treatment from OCC.
