Tribute to journalist Baby Moudud on 1st death anniversary

DHAKA, July 25, 2017 (BSS) – Speakers at a memorial meeting today said eminent journalist and former Member of Parliament (MP) Mahfuja Khatun Baby Moudud fought till her death to establish the spirit of War of Liberation and to build a non-communal Bangladesh.

Baby Moudud had struggled throughout her life to establish democracy, the spirit of independence and to make a non-communal state, they said, addressing a commemorative meeting on Baby Moudud held at the auditorium of Jatiya Press Club (JPC) here.

Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) organized the meeting to mark the first death anniversary of noted journalist and writer Baby Moudud.

Prime Minister’s Media Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury addressed the meeting as chief guest while JPC General Secretary Farida Yeasmin, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Secretary General Omar Faruque, BFUJ former Secretary General Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, JPC Treasurer Kartik Chatterjee, and Women Sangbadik Kendra Chairperson Nasimun Ara Haq, among others, addressed it.

Presided over by DUJ President Shaban Mahmud, the meeting was conducted by DUJ General Secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury.

Iqbal Sobhan said, “Baby Moudud was an institution. She worked for the people throughout her whole life. We need to follow her.”

Omar Faruque said Baby Moudud used to play a pioneer role during any movement of the journalists. Baby Moudud, a former lawmaker and one of the organizers of Women Rights Movement died of cancer last year at the age of 66.

She was born in Kolkata on June 23 in 1948. Her father Abdul Moudud was a justice. Her mother was Hedayetunnesa. Baby Moudud was third among her six brothers and three sisters.

Baby Moudud was a former Chief News Editor of the state-run news agency-Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). She started journalism in 1967 while studying at Dhaka University.

She was acting editor of weekly Bichitra for a long time. She worked as editor on social issues at BDnews 24.com.

She worked in different mainstream newspapers and news agencies like Daily Sangbad , BBC, Daily Ittefaq, Daily Chitrali, Weekly Lalana, Weekly Ranar, Daily Azad, Daily Gano Bangla and Daily Muktokantha.
