Tasty and chemical-free mango in Rajshahi markets

 RAJSHAHI, May 26, 2018 (BSS)- Farmers and traders have started harvesting and marketing mango complying the district administration’s timeframe facilitating the consumers to get tasty and chemical-free mango.

In initial stage of the season, traders are happy as they are getting good prices. Growers are seen taking their harvested fruit to various markets including Baneshwar, Godagari, Kansat and Rohanpur for selling in the last couple of days.

Afterwards, those are being supplied to different markets in the country including capital city Dhaka.

Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension, Dev Dulal Dhali said best practices of growing, harvesting and marketing of mangoes are being maintained strictly for ensuring the delicious fruit as safe to the consumers.

Emphasis is being given on development of packaging system for increasing the export of mangoes to other countries.

To this end, all concerned including agricultural officials and researchers,farmers and businessmen are working together.

Dhali said mango is the leading seasonal cash crop of the region and dominates its economy for the delicious fruit. So, there is no alternative to make the growers and others concerned habituated in maintaining hygienic condition and other best practices from production to marketing.

Modern technologies are being promoted commercially in the process to protect mango from unethical mixing of formalin and other harmful insecticides besides facilitating the farmers to get quality and better yield and price.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rajshahi, SM Abdul Kader said the district administration had adopted various awareness measures to resist entry of chemically treated mangoes in the markets.

If anyone is found guilty of harvesting immature mangoes and marketing those through mixing harmful chemicals, they will face punitive action, he added.

Already, 500kg of carbide-mixed mangoes were destroyed in different places here.

Principal Scientific Officer of Regional Fruit Research Station, Dr Alim Uddin said mango, the most delicious summer fruit have a bright prospect for exporting to European countries.

He added that mangoes should not be harvested before maturity. Time has come to forge social movement and campaign against the mixing of harmful chemicals with mango.
