Ensuring rights of women, girls stressed for attaining SDGs

 RANGPUR, May 25, 2018 (BSS) – Officials and civil society members at a project start-up workshop have laid emphasis on ensuring rights of women and girls for their proper development to attain the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

They came up with the observation at the workshop on ‘Supporting Human Rights Defenders Working for Women’s and Girls’ Rights in Bangladesh project’ held at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner here on Thursday afternoon.

The News Network in collaboration with Udayankur Seba Sangstha (USS) organised the event participated by around 100 journalists, government and NGO officials, civil society members, religious leaders, human and women rights activists and elite.

Chief Executive Officer and Editor of the News Network Shahiduzzaman presided over the workshop and narrated goals of the project being implemented in Rangpur, Satkhira, Jashore, Rajshahi, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts.

Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib as the chief guest addressed the event moderated by Sadrul Alam Dulu, President of Rangpur Press Club.

Rangpur Divisional Director of the Islamic Foundation Alhaj Abul Kalam Azad, District Women Affairs Officer Kawser Pervin, Deputy Director of the Department of Social Services Abdur Razzaque, human rights activists Advocate AAM Munir Chowdhury and Mosfeka Razzaque, madrasha teacher Moulana Azgar Ali, journalist Rafik Sarker, among others, spoke.

The participants raised various problems being faced by human rights defenders working for preventing repression, torture and violence against women, child marriage and sexual harassment to protect rights of the women and girls at grassroots levels.

In reply, Shahiduzzaman laid importance on joint efforts of government officials, human rights activists, journalists, teachers, guardians, civil society members and all conscious citizens to create social awareness to protect rights of the women and girls.

The chief guest said the present government has taken various pragmatic steps to ensure equal rights of the women and girl children for flourishing their talents and leadership to accelerate women empowerment at all levels for attaining the SDGs.
