DHAKA, May 22, 2018 (BSS) – Newly appointed UN Secretary-General’s special envoy to Myanmar Christine Schraner Burgener met with Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Masud Bin Momen in New York yesterday.

During the meeting, Burgener expressed her willingness to directly listen to the Rohingyas living in Cox’s Bazar camps, said an official release here today.

She thanked the Bangladesh government as well as the people of the country for giving shelter to a huge number of Rohingyas, who were displaced from Rakhain state in Myanmar.

Ambassador Momen congratulated Burgener for taking the charges of special envoy and invited her to visit Bangladesh sooner at a time convenient to her, the release added.

It is expected that Burgener will visit Myanmar in June and she might visit Bangladesh too at that time.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently announced the appointment of Burgener of Switzerland as his new special envoy to Myanmar.

She brings over 25 years of experience in diplomacy, having served in various high-level government positions in the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
