Ivy worked for welfare of women: JS speaker

DHAKA, Aug 24, 2019 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today said former Awami League (AL) Women Affairs Secretary late Ivy Rahman would remain as an iconic figure to the women forever as she worked for their right, freedom and welfare.

“In the past, the path for entering into politics was not smooth for women … However, Ivy Rahman came to politics facing hard times and always worked to uplift women in politics. She did many constructive works so that they could move forward by establishing themselves,” the speaker said at a discussion meeting here.

The speaker recalled that Ivy Rahman had efficiently organized the Awami League leaders and workers through her pragmatic leadership when she was alive.

The discussion meeting on Ivy Rahman, wife of late President M Zillur Rahman, was held at Ivy Rahman Auditorium of the Bangladesh Mahila Samity in the capital marking her 15th death anniversary.

Begum Ivy Rahman Death Anniversary Observance Committee arranged the discussion. Former Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, MP, Awami League Presidium Member Sahara Khatun and Deputy Minister for Water Resources Ministry AKM Enamul Haque addressed the function as special guests, among others.

Ivy Rahman Death Anniversary Observance Committee President M A Karim presided over the function while its member Lion Moshiur Ahmed conducted it.

Lawmaker Zakia Parvin Khanam, Deputy Attorney General Advocate Sheikh Md Sirajul Islam, Swadhinata Parishad President Jinnat Ali Khan Jinnah and its General Secretary Shahadat Hossain also spoke.

Ivy Rahman received grievous injuries during a grisly grenade attack on an AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city on August 21 in 2004 and succumbed to her injuries on August 24.
