Bay, Patenga terminals to be operational by 2020: Shahjahan

CHATTOGRAM, May 17, 2018 (BSS) – Shipping Minister M Shahjahan Khan today said Bay Terminal and Patenga Container Terminals are expected to go into operation by 2020.

The minister said the present government is pledge bound to turn country’s premier ports into green ports to check air pollution.

“The vessels which stay in outer anchorage have to run their respective engines, we are taking initiatives to supply power to the vessels, the Minister said as the chief guest while inaugurating a rail mounted gantry crane at Jetty number five of New mooring Container Terminal.

The port has moved up five spots from last year’s position and was ranked 71st among the 100 busiest container-handling maritime ports around the world.

“Chittagong maritime port reached a new high in container handling and we want to rank 10th according to the survey of Lloyd’s List,” the shipping minister said.

Addressing the function Chattogram Chamber President Mahbubul Alam said Chattogram port is now capable of handling 24 lakh Twenty equivalent units of containers which the milestone of Chattogram port history.

He urged the government to take all steps for growth and productivity of the port for overall economic dynamism of the country.

Presided over by port chairman commodore Julfiqur Aziz, the meeting was attended, among others, by additional secretary of shipping ministry Tariqul Islam, Chattogram Port member Jafar Alam and Commodores – Khandoker Akter Hossain, Shahin Rahman and Kamrul Amin.
