DHAKA, Aug 21, 2019 (BSS) – Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Iqbal Mahmood today said corruption is the key impediment to the country’s growing economy.
“Corruption is the key impediment to the country’s growing economy. But, the commission is working sincerely to check corruption,” he said while speaking at a meeting with a delegation of UNDP at the commission’s headquarters here.
Mahmood said the national anti-graft watchdog is carrying out multiple activities to prevent corruption.
“As part of these activities, the ACC has formed Satata Sanghas at some 28,000 educational institutions, including schools and colleges, across the country aiming to create moral values among new generation,” he added.
He said corruption prevention committees were formed at district, upazila and city levels to create awareness among people so that they raise voice against corruption.
The ACC chief said the commission has already formed 20 institutional teams to check corruption and irregularities in public service delivery by bringing a systematic reform in this regard.
After examining service providing systems of public agencies and identifying the reasons behind corruption, these teams have been submitting reports inserting recommendations to the authorities concerned, Mahmood said, adding that the commission has given importance on business process reengineering in corruption prevention.
He said the public hearing is a new strategy to bring transparency and accountability in the government offices.
“It (public hearing) could be a way in creating a direct connection between service receivers and government officials. That’s why transparency and accountability are ensued at local level,” the ACC chairman said.
