Govt to implement Tk 1,228cr project for Sylhet City infrastructures

DHAKA, Aug 14, 2019 (BSS) – The government has initiated a big move to construct new infrastructures in Sylhet City Corporation area as well as addressing its water logging under a Taka 1,228 crore proposed project aimed at rendering much better civic services to this city dwellers.

“The Planning Commission received a project to this end from the Ministry of LGRD and the Pre- Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting was held in this regard to further proceed with the project,” said a Senior Planning Commission official.

The official told BSS that addressing water logging and construction of infrastructures in Sylhet City Corporation has been proposed at an estimated cost of Taka 1,228 crore to be entirely borne from the state exchequer.

The project will be completed by June 2023 and Sylhet City Corporation will implement the project, he added.

He said the existing roads under various wards in Sylhet City Corporation are in bad shape due to rain while the existing drainage system of the city is not adequate enough to save the city dwellers from water logging.

The PEC meeting held on the project on July 7 discussed in details about the operational procedures of this project.

After detailed discussion, the Planning Commission asked the Ministry of LGRD to resubmit the project incorporating some components and changes and then it would be placed before the ECNEC meeting for its approval.

According to the LGRD Ministry and the Planning Commission, the project sites have been selected in line with the Master Plan framed earlier for this City Corporation.

The main proposed project operations include construction of some 327 kilometer RCC drains and setting up two sand embankments at the source of canals and falls, some 262 kilometers of road development, construction of 9 kilometer RCC retaining wall to protect the city dwellers from landslides as well as protecting the ponds in the city.

The major project operations include installing 65 kilometer paving blocks for attracting the pedestrians in the footpaths, constructing 20 kilometer road dividers, constructing six public toilets and installing and renovating some 145 kilometers road lights.

Besides, some 195 kilometers water pipeline would be installed to supply fresh water to the city dwellers side by side 10 deep tube wells would be set up.

the PEC Meeting sources said the implementing agency has been asked to reduce the number of packages of works from the proposed 140 packages side by side to ensure all procurement under the project through open tendering method.
