KHULNA, August 14, 2019 (BSS) – Rawhide traders in Khulna are expecting to recover the losses which they incurred in the last season.

General Secretary of Khulna Rawhide Traders Association Abdus Salam Dhali
told BSS yesterday that they want to recover the losses as the price of
rawhide is cheaper than the previous year.

“International leather market depends on the demand of the United State
(US). It sees a downward trend due to less cold in the countries where long
spell of cold wave increases the demand of leather-made products,” he said.

Expressing fear that rawhide might be smuggled out of country due to its
lower price, he requested law enforcement agencies to take necessary security
measures.

Hoarders of rawhide claimed that they had to spend Tk10 to Tk15 for per
square feet of rawhide than tanners-fixed price due to hike in salt price
during sacrificial event this year.

“Seasonal buyers of rawhide created a syndicate as they bought cattle
hides at very low price. Later, they supplied the skin to us at doubled
price,” he added.

“They got per rawhide at Tk 350 to Tk 450 on an average and we bought per
cattle hide from them at Tk 600 to Tk 800.” Dhali said.

He also expressed his frustration over the price of salt as it soared from
Tk 700 to Tk 800 per sack.

It caused extra expenditure on per cattle hide to preserve, he said,
adding that we may run up losses if the tanners association remains
determined on the fixed price.

The government fixed the price of per square feet of cowhide at Tk 35 to
Tk 40 while the goat skin is between Tk 13 and Tk 18.
