DHAKA, Aug 7, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory
Commission (BTRC) has canceled the licenses of 124 VoIP Service Providers
(VSPs).

BTRC took the move as the VSPs did not pay the outstanding dues or apply
appropriately within the time before the expiry of the licenses.

Zakir Hossain Khan, Senior Assistant Director of BTRC, said a letter in
this regard, issued on August 5, was sent to the concerned VSPs.

The BTRC letter said 106 VPSs failed to pay the government dues and
renew licenses in time while licenses of the 18 VSPs were not renewed for
failing to submit applications properly.

BTRC said now the aforementioned VSPs have no legality and that is why
any activities of these VSPs will be punishable offense under Bangladesh
Telecommunication Act-2001.

The VSPs have been asked to clear the dues within a month, otherwise
legal action would be taken under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Act-2001
and Public Demand Recovery Act, 1913.

On July 22, 2012 BTRC invited applications from the entrepreneurs by
posting the final VoIP guideline on its website and 1,500 applied.

On March, 2013 over 900 firms received the VSP licenses for the first
time in the country among the qualified 1004 firms.
