Jobs will relieve 6192 poor women of poverty

DHAKA, Aug 5, 2019 (BSS) – Nearly 6,200 ultra poor women will be taken out of poverty through creation of decent and sustainable jobs in four northern districts.

The government has taken the initiative under the social security project named SWAPNO (3rd phase) that is being implemented with assistance of UNDP and SIDA in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and Jamalpur districts.

The total budget of the third phase of SWAPNO (Strengthening Women’s Ability for Productive New Opportunities) is USD 7.3 million, where the government of Bangladesh, SIDA and UNDP contribute $3.2 million, $3.5 million and $ 0.6 million respectively.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) signed an agreement in this regard here today, a press release said.

Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka and UNDP Resident Representative inked the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.

During the signing ceremony, the UNDP representative said the project has been working to bring transformative changes in the lives of extreme poor women in Bangladesh through creation of decent and sustainable job opportunities and involving them in income generating activities.

The project will help Bangladesh in attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he observed.

Earlier in the first two phases, SWAPNO had succeeded in relieving 8,928 vulnerable women from poverty in Satkhira and Kurigram districts.
