Chumky calls for resisting violence against women

 RAJSHAHI, May 12, 2015 (BSS)- State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumky has asked all district and upazila level officials and others concerned to prevent violence and repression against women.

“The field level officials and staffs should come forward and work together with utmost sincerity and honesty to free the women from violence unitedly,” she further said while addressing the best joyeeta reception function in Rajshahi today as chief guest.

She mentioned that prevention of all obstacles and odd situation being faced by the women can be the best ways of women empowerment together with transforming them into worthy citizens.

Rajshahi divisional administration organised the function with the association of Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and directorate of women affairs.

On the occasion, forty grass-root levels, including five in divisional level, were accorded with ‘Best Joyeeta Reception’ at Government Community Centre auditorium. They were successful women in five different sectors.

Chaired by Nur-Ur-Rahman, Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi, the ceremony was addressed, among others, by Secretary of Women and Children Affairs Ministry Nasima Begum and Director General of Directorate of Women Affairs Kazi Rawshan Akter.

State Minister Chumky said the present government with dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken various initiatives to create women-friendly atmosphere in the country so that the women can play an important role for country’s socioeconomic development.

Women were titled Joyeeta (a Bengali word for winning women). Joyeeta Onneshone Bangladesh – a government initiative introduced in 2009- has had a tremendous impact on the society. Grassroots women have responded well to the initiative, showing a positive indicator of women’s empowerment, she added.

Recognition via the Joyeeta award will further encourage women to face various challenges more confidently and become role models for the society, they hoped.

Five women were selected as ‘Joyeeta’ in five different categories by the respective Union committee and later by the upazila, district and divisional committees under the guidance of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, the organisers of the programme informed.

40 women have been recognised at the sub-district, district and divisional level of Rajshahi for their extraordinary achievements in different fields of development e like economic success, education and employment, successful mother, prevention of repression and social development.

Each of the awarded joyeeta received cash Taka 10,000, crest, scarf and certificate as sign of recognition for their achievements.
